The Importance of Self-Care: Practices For A Healthy Mind, Body and Soul

Why is self-care important?

Self-care is something I have become very passionate about in the past few years.  I have written about everything from spa days to meditation to holidays and everything in between. In addition to leisure, self-care is also about ensuring you are living the life you truly deserve.

How can we practice self-care

To practice self-care effectively, you must be open minded about your strengths and also your areas for improvement. In this post, I have joined forces with Susan from Susan Tomison’s Blog to talk about the importance of self-care:

Self-care isn’t just about healthy living or taking meds when you feel unwell. Self-care is about prioritising your emotional, social, mental and spiritual health. Failing to practice self-care on a regular basis will do you more harm than good.

Why should you practice self-care?

It boosts your self-esteem: Self-care encourages you to get to know more about yourself and ultimately improves your sense of self worth. Once you have a routine in place, you won’t miss a single activity you have planned. It will improve your quality of life as well as ensuring you adopt a healthy work-life balance. In a world where we work far more than we should, (mostly because we are hooked to electronic devices) signing off once in a while is mandatory. Don’t allow a lack of energy or time to stop you from being good to you.

It helps you manage stress: Doing something as simple as cooking a meal from scratch is a great form of self-care. Other examples include spending time with friends and family, going for a brisk walk, doing some yoga or reading a new book. All the things mentioned (and so much more) can help you feel more relaxed.

It improves physical health: We have all had that inner 20-minute conversation over whether we should go to the gym. It usually starts with all the reasons you shouldn’t go and gradually, the negative talk should start to disappear. Once you’ve finished your workout, don’t you feel so much better? Taking control of your physical health is one of the simplest ways to incorporate self-care into your daily routine. In addition to looking good, you will feel much better too due to the endorphins that are released when you engage in physical activity.

It helps you value your own company: Do you ever have those moments where you feel like you need some alone time just to even function? Spending time in your own company is one of the most liberating things ever! For example, taking yourself out to eat or going on a spa day is a great way to enjoy your single status (if you are single). Another benefit of alone time is that you understand yourself better. Indulging in self-care alone and in a public place may seem daunting at first, so it’s best to start small and take it from there.

What are examples of self-care?

Emotional self-care

Professional self-care

Physical self-care

Spiritual self-care

What are some ideas for self-care?

Here are some simple and easy to follow, self-care tips:

Drink lots of water – In addition to aiding weight loss, water is definitely the best thing since sliced bread. Health professionals recommend drinking 2 litres every day. This may be tricky for some so start small and increase your consumption as time goes on.

Eat healthily – Remember the saying ‘you are what you eat’? Try not to miss important meals such as breakfast and lunch. Remember that everything can be eaten in moderation. Look into healthier alternatives. This will improve the relationship you have with food. Something I do is buy everything I need for lunch in advance. This stops me from making unhealthy choices and I also have more control over what I eat.

Do exercise – There is no denying that exercise makes you feel good. When it comes to working out, choose what works for you. A lot of people tend to forget that the gym should be fun. If you don’t feel motivated to keep pushing as you workout, you may need to switch things up a little.

Take naps – Naps are a great way to recharge and give your body a rest. Research has actually proven that naps have a positive effect on productivity.

Relax – Do your nails, have a bubble bath or put on a face mask. Find something that calms your senses and do more of that. I had a very hectic day yesterday and as soon as I had my dinner, I did my nails. There was something very therapeutic about the fact that I was just focusing on myself and enjoying the moment. I hadn’t done my nails in ages!

Socialise – Call a friend, arrange a day or evening out, visit family members etc. Being social is a great form of self-care. We all deserve to be around people who make us feel good.

Listen to music – Listen to songs that improve your mood or remind you of a happy moment in your life. There’s nothing like listening to a song or album that makes you feel nostalgic. It’s a great feeling.

How can I make self-care part of my daily routine?

The easiest way to make self-care a part of your daily routine is to plan ahead. If you are someone who hates doing nothing, plan experiences in advance. This will give you something to look forward to and will also help reduce those feelings of guilt you may have. Creating a plan may also help, for example: you may decide to do nothing on Wednesday evenings, so as soon as you get home you put a facial on and read your new book.

One thing to remember is that your needs will change over time. Find out what makes you happy or what brings you peace and do more of that. Self-care is an authentic experience so don’t do something because everyone else is. You won’t have fun and you’ll be even more stressed than you were before. Remember that self-care is about you. It all starts with you, so own it.

Thank you for reading this post and a huge thank you to Susan for her contribution – be sure to follow her blog.

As always, I love to hear from you all so if you have a fave self-care activity, do leave a comment below.
