My Skincare Saviours

Posted on

In this post, I’ll be introducing you to my skincare saviours! It’s been a while since I’ve done a beauty post, and if you follow me on Twitter, you’ll probably have seen so many tweets where I’ve promised to do a review and it just hasn’t happened. The good news is that I will be collaborating with a well known makeup brand very soon, so I will keep you all posted.

In March, I went to Melanin Beauty Live, and I felt encouraged to really ‘jazz up’ my skincare routine. Some of my biggest skin issues are spots (especially as I approach my time of the month) and hyper-pigmentation. As every expert spoke, I was taking notes on my phone and was determined to be able to give my skin the TLC it really needed. As mentioned in my MBL blog post, it takes about 12 weeks to notice if a product is actually doing anything for your skin. Do not get discouraged. Be consistent and if the product is not for you, it’s not the end of the world. Here are my skincare saviours:

Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Gels – I had never heard of Skyn Iceland prior to MBL. Unlike the majority of eye gels on the market, these ones have this amazing cooling effect, so you just know when the product is at work. Another thing I like about these eye gels is that they also increase firmness (hence the name) and brighten dark circles. If you’re a person who has a lot of late nights and early mornings, they would be perfect for you. They are pricey but on a positive note, you only need to use then once a week. Right now, I’m using mine twice a week (because I’m extra) so I’ll need to stock up very soon.

La Roche Posay Anthelios Gel-Cream – This gel cream was recommended by one of the experts at MBL. I had actually missed the first session on the day and arrived just in time to hear about the importance of sunscreen. Since late last year, I have been using the NeoStrata Sheer Hydrator (which I will talk more about later). It has a SPF, but I was on the lookout for something that I could use on my body in the summer. I mix a tiny drop of this cream with my moisturiser every day and I haven’t had any additional dark spots since. If you are oily skinned and you want to start using an SPF, make sure it is non-comedogenic. Another pro is that it doesn’t leave any of those awful white marks on the skin. I value SPF now more than I ever did. I always used to think that thought black people didn’t need protection from the sun. The truth is that we do, so if you value your melanin, be sure to invest in an SPF.

NARS Pore and Shine Control Primer – I have a confession to make: I’m one of those people with combination skin who uses M.O.M (milk of magnesia) as a primer. It’s not great (it’s been claimed that it causes dryness of the skin) but I only apply it on the areas of my face that get oily, so my T-Zone and my chin. When I was on my way to Amsterdam in February, I noticed that I’d left my M.O.M at home. Luckily, there was a NARS stand at Gatwick, so I bought the Pore and Shine Control Primer. This primer saved me! I was so surprised because everyone usually raves about NARS’s foundations, and not their skincare. The only thing to know about this primer is that you may want to give it a minute or two to really sink into your skin before you apply your makeup. It will last much longer. Also, using your fingertips is key to getting the most out of this product and a small amount goes a long way. I don’t even need to use M.O.M anymore.

NeoStrata Sheer Hydration SPF35 Cream – If you are serious about transforming your skin, I would recommend looking into Neostrata. Enlighten, Resurface and Restore are just some of the skincare ranges that were created with a number of specific skin issues in mind. Since using this product, I have noticed that my skin tone has improved, it looks a lot more even. Also, the fact that it has SPF is a huge bonus, so if I forget to apply any, it’s not a big deal. One thing to note when using this cream is that you’ll need to wait 15 minutes before you go out into the sun.

Dr Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Universal Peel – These peels are revolutionary. I always thought that the only place you could get a peel done was at the spa, but these wonders from Dr Dennis Gross have proved me wrong. My skin is clearer, radiant and feels so smooth. They are pricey so you may want to stick to using them only when your skin needs a pick me up.

The Beauty Foundry Tightening Retinol Overnight Mask – Unless you get lucky on a trip to TK Maxx, it it’s highly unlikely that you’ll be able to get your hands on this mask. If you see it, I definitely recommend snapping it up. Within a week, I had younger looking skin. I apply the mask two-three times a week. As you will know from my MBL blog post, retinol is one of the skincare ingredients to look out for! It’s great for helping the skin maintain a youthful appearance.

Nip and Fab Glycolic Fix Daily Cleansing Pads – These little wonders do exactly what it says on the tube. In recent years, Nip and Fab have experienced a resurgence in popularity – and once I tried their daily cleansing pads, it was clear to see why. These pads have made my skin feel so soft and a whole lot clearer. At the moment, I’m not using a toner, so I love that the witch hazel in it works to tone the skin. On your first application, you may get a tingling sensation on your skin, but don’t worry that’s normal. Of course, if irritation occurs, stop using it.

Nivea MicellAIR Skin Breathe Micellar Water – Ditching makeup wipes was the best thing I ever did guys! I’ve turned to micellar water and I haven’t looked back. What I love about this micellar water is that it removes absolutely everything! All I need is two cotton pads and I am makeup free and ready to cleanse. If you are using makeup wipes, you may want to think about ditching them for micellar water, which will be a lot kinder to your skin.

Glamglow Thirstymud Hydrating Treatment – I alternate between this hydrating treatment and the Retinol Overnight Mask ideally in the evening. This is another product that was in my goodie bag. As you know, I have oily/combination skin and the idea of my skin glowing never sat well with me, purely because I didn’t want anything drawing attention to my skin. Within 10-15 minutes, this treatment transforms the skin. It smells amazing as well which is a bonus. It’s even light enough to be massaged into the skin!

Since I’ve started using these products, I’ve started to become a lot more confident in my own skin. What are your skincare saviours? As always, I love to hear from you all so do feel free to leave a comment below.

I love skincare so much and I always look for new recommendations. I have tried to nip and fan pads and loved them, currently using the Pixi glow tonic in place of them now and they’re both great products. I love that you were inspired by an event to care for your skin and be proud of the skin you’re in. That’s awesome to hear!

I do too. I’m honestly so thankful I went to Melanin Beauty Live.
I’ve heard some good things about Pixi – I will research the brand a little more
I’m glad to hear that both products are working for you x
