What To Look For When Choosing A New Apartment

Apr. 08, 2020

Ready to move house? Or step out for the first time on your own? Starting the search for a new apartment is both exciting and incredibly daunting. With so much to think about and consider, from the location to the price, it’s difficult to know where to begin.

Ensuring that you choose a property that both safe and secure is paramount, after all, no one wants to move into a property that’s going to harm their health – lawyers answer questions about asbestos exposure here, just click the link – so carrying out some detailed and thorough checks before you sign your name on the dotted line is crucial.

Read on for what to look for when choosing a new apartment:

Keep an eye out for “pests” – You don’t have to see a rat or cockroach running across the floor to know that there’s a pest problem. Sometimes, you just need to spot the subtle signs of an infestation to know that the property in question is a no-go. Check the inside and the top of cabinets, look for signs of mouse droppings or dead insects. Spotted a mousetrap in the corner? That tells you all you need to know! If you really like the property, then your best bet would be to find an exterminator. Just search for exterminator near me on search engines.

Visit the property at night – You’ve visited the property several times and everything seems fine. But did you know your neighbour likes to practice on his drum kit between the hours of 9pm-1am? Or the bar across the street is incredibly noisy at night? Visiting the property at night is an absolute must before you sign the lease. From street noise, to loud neighbours, even crime and bad smells from nearby takeaways or restaurants will be brought to your attention.

Check the cell phone reception – Smartphones are a part of modern life, but they’re no use if there’s no signal. Make sure you check the quality of the reception you’re getting in every room of the apartment and ask about whether Wi-fi is included in the utilities.

Check all the outlets and positioning – We all have a large number of electricals that need to be plugged in. Check all the outlets in the property by bringing something along something small to plug in. A phone charger will do. Also, take note of where the outlets are and how many there are.

Speak with neighbours – Speaking with neighbours will help you gauge whether or not you’ll get along there. What’s the noise like? Are they friendly? Or is there anything else you should know about the property?

Watching #TheUltimatum and all I can say is that I’m ready for the French and South African versions to return. Like Love Is Blind, the U.S version has had its day.

It used to be Sana Jardin - Tiger By Her Side but the brand closed down. Not sure what’s going to be my go-to now. Currently wearing Nishane’s Thorns Become Roses, which is quite nice.
